A bit of history
At the end of the 19th century, golf was becoming increasingly popular with the English aristocracy, who were also very fond of France’s spa towns. Casinos, theatres and ballrooms were no longer enough to entertain the spa-goers and other members of high-society. To offer a wider range of activities, resorts began to build sporting facilities in the early 20th century, including tennis courts and golf courses.
The Royat Charade golf course was created in 1930 by Joseph Agid, director of the Grand Hotel Royat Palace. The course is 5 km from the spa resort at an altitude of 850 m. The clubhouse quickly became a favourite destination for spa-goers. A bus service was put in place, with departures every half hour.
By the 1980s, there was little room for new members at the club. A new golf course was built in Orcines, at the foot of volcanoes on the site of Les Bruyères des Moines. Its magnificent grounds blend together perfectly with the sumptuous landscapes of the Chaîne des Puys.
