The Chaîne des Puys is a chain of more than 80 volcanoes, running from north to south. The volcano range is 45 km long, with a width ranging from 3 to 5 km. The volcanoes are relatively young: with the first eruption taking place 95,000 years ago and the most recent one just 8,600 years ago. The highest point along the Chaîne des Puys is the Puy de Dome (1,465 m).

The Chaîne des Puys – Limagne Fault “tectonic arena” was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on July 2, 2018. It is the first natural site of mainland France to be included on the list.
